Classicism, the first democracy and the Bauhaus: three eras that changed the world lie only a few steps apart in Weimar. This big walk connects them. From the market square with Cranach House and Hotel Elephant, it goes via Platz der Demokratie to Goethe's ginkgo tree, into the Park on the Ilm with Goethe's Garden House, past the Liszt House to the Bauhaus University and the Historic Cemetery with the Princes' Vault. At the end you reach Goethe's and Schiller's homes and Theaterplatz with the National Theatre, where the National Assembly met in 1919.
I don't tell a chain of dates, but the stories behind them: why Schiller's coffin in the Princes' Vault is empty, how Christiane Vulpius protected Goethe from Napoleon's soldiers, and why Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar of all places.
