The Marshall Plan supported reconstruction and Coca-Cola came back again as an icon of the Western lifestyle. West-Berlin was under Allied protection and control until 1994. The US military maintained a strong presence in the southwest of Berlin. The Freie (freedom) University was established by American as a symbol of free science. The influence is evident in basketball and the Berlin Thunder football team. Chewing gum, corned beef, toast, filter coffee, Lucky Strike, a recent NFL game and so much more USA in town!
